The Potters and Sculptors Club: A Rich History of Creativity and Growth

As we look back on the storied history of the Potters and Sculptors Club, we can’t help but be reminded of the old ad for Virginia Slims cigarettes: “You’ve come a long way, baby.” Indeed, our club has come a long way since its humble beginnings, and we’re proud of the journey we’ve taken together.

In January 1973, our club was born out of the separation of Ceramic Casters (originally known as Slip Casting) and Potters and Sculptors, which mutually agreed to become two distinct clubs. At the time, our fledgling organization boasted a membership of 75 dedicated and hardworking individuals, who banded together to create a supportive and nurturing community for ceramic and sculptural artists. Today, our membership has more than doubled, reaching over 150 passionate artists.

In the early days, our members faced challenges head-on, with the club’s board taking on a Herculean task of building the organization from the ground up. They established the club’s purpose, set rules and regulations, and outlined guidelines for using and maintaining the studio. They also instituted monthly board meetings and membership meetings to ensure smooth operation and open communication within the club.

Inflation may have taken its toll over the years – yearly dues were a mere $200 back in 1973, compared to today’s $213 – but the spirit and dedication of our members have remained constant. Our club has thrived, thanks to the unwavering commitment of those who have joined our ranks.

On May 18, 1973, our club celebrated its official opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, proudly showcasing our new studio to the Golden Rain Foundation. Since that momentous day, we’ve continued to create art, learn, grow, and have a good time together.

Our club’s success is due in no small part to the outstanding teachers who have guided us on our artistic journeys and the generous support and assistance of our fellow members. We’ve weathered some challenges along the way, but through it all, we’ve emerged stronger and more united than ever.

As we look forward to the future, we’re grateful for the solid foundation laid by our hardworking “pioneers,” whose dedication set us on a path of growth and success. We cherish the bonds we’ve formed, the art we’ve created, and the memories we’ve shared as part of the Potters and Sculptors Club. Here’s to the next chapter in our club’s rich history – may it be filled with creativity, friendship, and continued growth!
